Hawaii’s smoke seasons
NWS Honolulu's fire weather page tracks fuel conditions with the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which runs from 0 (saturated soil) to 800 (extreme drought); a KBDI greater than 600, the highest 34% of values from 1975-2010, is typically encountered by late July and normally persists through late October, and fire weather forecasts are issued twice a day around 5:30 am/pm HST. [1] The 2023 State Hazard Mitigation Plan's wildfire chapter states that each year approximately 0.5% of the State of Hawaii's total land area burns, equal to or greater than the proportion burned of any other state, that over 98% of the total wildfires are human-caused, that in the last 10 years nearly 1,000 wildfires burned an average of 20,000 acres per year statewide, and that over 25% of the state contains non-native, fire-prone grasses and shrubs. [2] The plan's Table 4.15-2 counts wildfires over 100 acres by year: 9 fires and 33,727 acres in 2018, 9 and 16,835 in 2019, 5 and 5,200 in 2020, 2 and 41,400 in 2021, and 2 and 19,000 in 2022 (source NOAA 2023), an average of more than 23,200 acres per year, with the August 2023 Hawaii and Maui County fires listed as an ongoing event whose impacts had yet to be determined. [2]
EPA says the August 8, 2023 Maui wildfires affected approximately 1,550 parcels and 2,200 structures; its Phase 1 hazardous materials removal finished December 21, 2023 after crews removed more than 200 tons of hazardous materials from 1,400-plus properties, including more than 30 tons of lithium batteries from 94 electric and hybrid vehicles and 274 power walls, before a soil stabilizer was applied to keep ash from migrating. [3] Smoke does not respect the fire perimeter: in Hawaii the houses that never saw a flame spend days inside the plume, and their air is the subject of this page.
Air quality in Hawaii: reading the numbers
Hawaii’s air-quality agency is the Hawaii Department of Health — Clean Air Branch. The Clean Air Branch is responsible for air pollution control in the state through its Engineering, Monitoring and Enforcement sections; it links to Hawaii Ambient Air Quality Data and to Kula, Lahaina and Olowalu ambient air monitoring, and issues mandatory No Burn Periods (North and South Kona until 12 noon October 2, 2026; Kau until further notice) with civil and administrative penalties of up to $10,000 per day per violation. [4] DOH's Maui data portal says that as of June 2024 more than 50 devices mounted throughout Lahaina continuously measure particle pollution, with air particles also lab-tested for metals and asbestos fibers; beginning in September 2023 EPA sprayed Soiltac on the ash to keep it in place, and sampling shows heavy metals are the main fire-related risk drivers because the fire was hot enough to melt glass, aluminum and even asbestos and destroy most dioxins and PAHs. [5] DOH collected a multi-part ash sample from 100 homes in the Lahaina burn area on November 7 and 8, 2023 and from eight burned homes in Kula on September 21, 2023; Lahaina ash showed bioaccessible arsenic of 62 to 69 mg/kg against a 23 mg/kg unrestricted-soil action level and lead of 383 to 431 mg/kg against 200, with antimony, cobalt and copper also above screening levels, while Kula ash showed total arsenic of 3,080 to 3,260 mg/kg. [6]
Nationally, the AQI [7] turns PM2.5 concentrations into six colour bands; from 101 (orange) sensitive groups are affected, from 151 (red) everyone is, and the AirNow wildfire map [8] shows the Hawaii monitors and the smoke plume together. What the outdoor number does not tell you is the indoor number, and that is where the health question actually lives.
What the smoke does, and to whom, in Hawaii
Wildfire smoke is mostly fine particulate — PM2.5 — with carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and, when structures burn, the metals and plastics of a Hawaii neighbourhood. The particles are small enough to reach the deep lung and the bloodstream. DOH's Maui Wildfire Data portal issues environmental advisories when monitoring shows hazardous levels of substances in air, water or soil; its advisories page currently states 'No Environmental Advisories are active at this time' and offers the Hawaii Poison Center at 800-222-1222, available 24/7, for questions about fire-related environmental exposures. [9]

- Older adults and anyone with heart or lung disease, including asthma and COPD, feel Hawaii’s smoke at lower concentrations.
- Pregnant people and their pregnancies; outdoor workers in Hawaii; people who cannot afford to close the windows in the heat.
Symptoms run from stinging eyes and a scratchy throat through coughing and wheezing to chest tightness and shortness of breath. Keeping it out of a Hawaii house
The EPA’s guidance on wildfires and indoor air quality [10] is the standard playbook: close windows and doors, set the HVAC to recirculate and fit the highest-MERV filter the system tolerates, run a HEPA air cleaner in one room and make that the clean room, do not add to indoor particles (no candles, no frying, no vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum), and open up to ventilate when the outdoor AQI drops. In Hawaii’s heat that trade-off is real, which is why a clean room with a portable air cleaner is the practical unit of protection rather than the whole house.
When the outdoor air clears, the Hawaii house may not have. Residue that settled on surfaces and in the ductwork keeps releasing what it absorbed, and the smell that returns on warm days is that residue. That is the point at which a health question becomes a measurement question — and then a claim question.
After the smoke: test, then claim
If your Hawaii home smells of smoke, two kinds of professional are relevant and it helps to know which you are calling. Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) and environmental consultants test: they measure what settled on the surfaces and what is still in the air, and they put a number on it. Fire damage restoration technicians — disaster restoration specialists — clean: soot comes off with chemical sponges and HEPA vacuums, odor is treated with air scrubbers and thermal fogging, and any firefighting water is dried out before it becomes a mold problem.
