Utah’s smoke seasons
Utah's statutory Closed Fire Season runs June 1 through October 31 each year; during that window open burning outside incorporated areas requires a permit from the county fire warden or sheriff and notification to the local 911 dispatch non-emergency line, and leaving a fire unattended is a class C misdemeanor. FFSL's 2024 report describes critical conditions from late June through July, a brief monsoon lull in August, and a renewed spike in fires from September to mid-October. [1] FFSL's 2024 Utah Wildfire Annual Report counts 1,244 wildfire reports and 90,660 acres burned as of October 31, 2024, with 710 human-caused starts (57 percent) accounting for 29,059 acres; equipment (200 fires), debris burning (98) and camping (77) were the top human causes, and only 89 fires exceeded 10 acres. [2] The same FFSL report states that 133 structures were destroyed by wildfire in Utah from 2019 through 2024, that 526,000 acres burned from 2020 through 2024, and that $159 million in state funding went to wildfire suppression from 2019 through 2024. [2]
The Brian Head Fire began June 17, 2017 near Brian Head in Parowan Canyon and burned about 71,672 acres in Iron and Garfield counties (63,648 acres of Forest Service land and 6,514 acres of private land), with 11,639 acres burned at high severity; post-fire rehabilitation cost about $5.77 million. [3] By July 18, 2017 the Brian Head Fire had destroyed 21 structures, 13 of them homes, across Iron and Garfield counties, with suppression costs of about $34 million, 75 percent of it covered by FEMA. [4] Smoke does not respect the fire perimeter: in Utah the houses that never saw a flame spend days inside the plume, and their air is the subject of this page.
Air quality in Utah: reading the numbers
Utah’s air-quality agency is the Utah Department of Environmental Quality — Division of Air Quality. Utah DEQ's wildfire page identifies fine particulates (PM2.5) as the primary health concern from short-term smoke exposure because they lodge deep in the lungs, and notes that smoke exposure can be sudden, last for days or weeks, and degrade indoor as well as outdoor air quality. [5] During wildfires the Division of Air Quality updates current conditions hourly and posts a three-day forecast for 12 counties (Box Elder, Cache, Carbon, Davis, Duchesne, Iron, Salt Lake, Tooele, Uintah, Utah, Washington and Weber) via air.utah.gov and the UtahAir app, and uses the 5-3-1 visibility index: under 5 miles is unhealthy for sensitive groups, under 3 miles unhealthy for everyone, under 1 mile everyone should avoid outdoor activity. [6] The Division of Air Quality says a typical Utah winter brings five to six multi-day inversion episodes and on average 18 days with PM2.5 above the federal standard, because the Wasatch, Oquirrh and Traverse mountains form a basin that traps cold air in the Salt Lake Valley. [7]
Nationally, the AQI [8] turns PM2.5 concentrations into six colour bands; from 101 (orange) sensitive groups are affected, from 151 (red) everyone is, and the AirNow wildfire map [9] shows the Utah monitors and the smoke plume together. What the outdoor number does not tell you is the indoor number, and that is where the health question actually lives.
What the smoke does, and to whom, in Utah
Wildfire smoke is mostly fine particulate — PM2.5 — with carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and, when structures burn, the metals and plastics of a Utah neighbourhood. The particles are small enough to reach the deep lung and the bloodstream. The Utah DHHS public health indicator report on wildland fires lists shortness of breath, chest pain, headaches, coughing, irritated sinuses and stinging eyes as common smoke-inhalation symptoms, and identifies people with asthma, heart or lung disease and other respiratory conditions as most at risk, noting even healthy people can be affected during severe or frequent smoke events. [10] SmokeReadyUtah, a Division of Air Quality project with DHHS, UCAIR, the University of Utah and Snow College, is deploying low-cost PM2.5 and CO2 AirU sensors indoors and outdoors at about 40 public schools in underserved smoke-affected communities and distributing portable air cleaners and high-efficiency filters, with completion set for March 2027. [11]

- Older adults and anyone with heart or lung disease, including asthma and COPD, feel Utah’s smoke at lower concentrations.
- Pregnant people and their pregnancies; outdoor workers in Utah; people who cannot afford to close the windows in the heat.
Symptoms run from stinging eyes and a scratchy throat through coughing and wheezing to chest tightness and shortness of breath. Keeping it out of a Utah house
The EPA’s guidance on wildfires and indoor air quality [12] is the standard playbook: close windows and doors, set the HVAC to recirculate and fit the highest-MERV filter the system tolerates, run a HEPA air cleaner in one room and make that the clean room, do not add to indoor particles (no candles, no frying, no vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum), and open up to ventilate when the outdoor AQI drops. In Utah’s heat that trade-off is real, which is why a clean room with a portable air cleaner is the practical unit of protection rather than the whole house.
When the outdoor air clears, the Utah house may not have. Residue that settled on surfaces and in the ductwork keeps releasing what it absorbed, and the smell that returns on warm days is that residue. That is the point at which a health question becomes a measurement question — and then a claim question.
After the smoke: test, then claim
If your Utah home smells of smoke, two kinds of professional are relevant and it helps to know which you are calling. Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) and environmental consultants test: they measure what settled on the surfaces and what is still in the air, and they put a number on it. Fire damage restoration technicians — disaster restoration specialists — clean: soot comes off with chemical sponges and HEPA vacuums, odor is treated with air scrubbers and thermal fogging, and any firefighting water is dried out before it becomes a mold problem.
