Washington’s smoke seasons

The Washington Military Department's Emergency Management Division says the state's wildland fire season usually begins in early July and typically ends in early October when regular rain returns, though fires have occurred in every month; the state fights roughly 900 wildland fires a year, about 70 percent of them in Eastern Washington. [1] DNR is Washington's wildfire fighting force, responsible for fire protection on more than 13 million acres of private and state-owned forest land with roughly 600 permanent and seasonal firefighting employees; DNR says about 85 percent of Washington's wildfires are caused by people. [2] DNR's 2024 season report counted 826 DNR fires (313 west side, 513 east side) through September 30, 2024, with 24 large fires burning 185,558 acres statewide, 63 percent of it non-forested; there were no civilian or firefighter fatalities and smoke impacts were low. [3]

DNR's Facilitated Learning Analysis says the Gray and Oregon Road fires ignited 41 miles apart in Spokane County in August 2023, burned 23,000 acres, and destroyed 366 primary homes and 710 total structures; more than 1,000 Level 3 evacuations were ordered within two hours of the first Gray Fire 911 call and 13 miles of I-90 were closed. [4] Washington's 2014 disaster request described the Carlton Complex in Okanogan and Chelan counties, ignited by a July 8, 2014 lightning storm, as the largest fire in state history at more than 255,164 acres with over 300 homes destroyed; damage teams were able to survey 244 of the destroyed homes. [5] Smoke does not respect the fire perimeter: in Washington the houses that never saw a flame spend days inside the plume, and their air is the subject of this page.

Air quality in Washington: reading the numbers

Washington’s air-quality agency is the Washington State Department of Ecology — Air Quality. Ecology's wildfire smoke page says the agency issues 5-day smoke forecasts in summer (2-day in winter) built from local clean air agency data and a Washington State University smoke model, posts local conditions on the Washington Smoke Blog, and publishes instructions for a low-cost DIY clean air fan; a statewide emergency burn ban runs until noon on September 30, 2026. [6] The Washington Smoke Blog is a joint forecast and information site run by meteorologists and scientists from Ecology, DNR, the Department of Health, the U.S. Forest Service, local clean air agencies, and Tribes, posting regional smoke outlooks, fire updates, and air quality alerts through the season. [7] Ecology's 2021 Smoke Ready guidance explains that its Washington Air Quality Advisory (WAQA) was built on lower fine-particle (PM2.5) levels than the federal AQI so it could alert Washingtonians to unhealthy smoke earlier; both scales use the same color categories from good to hazardous. The same post notes more than 80 percent of U.S. wildfires are started by people. [8]

Nationally, the AQI [9] turns PM2.5 concentrations into six colour bands; from 101 (orange) sensitive groups are affected, from 151 (red) everyone is, and the AirNow wildfire map [10] shows the Washington monitors and the smoke plume together. What the outdoor number does not tell you is the indoor number, and that is where the health question actually lives.

What the smoke does, and to whom, in Washington

Wildfire smoke is mostly fine particulate — PM2.5 — with carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and, when structures burn, the metals and plastics of a Washington neighbourhood. The particles are small enough to reach the deep lung and the bloodstream. DOH's smoke protection guidance recommends MERV 13 filters in HVAC systems set to recirculate, filter-only HEPA portable cleaners, or a DIY box fan fitted with a 20-by-20-inch MERV 13 filter (about 10 to 15 minutes to clean a 15-by-15-foot room), and says N95 masks filter most fine particles but not gases; sensitive groups should reduce exposure starting at AQI 51-100 and everyone should limit activity at AQI 151 and above. [11] Ecology's account of the September 2020 smoke siege says that from September 12 to 17 every air quality monitor in Washington measured particulate pollution above federal standards, that most of the state had at least five straight days of very unhealthy or hazardous air, and that it produced more statewide hazardous days than any episode since PM2.5 monitoring began in 2000, worse than 2014, 2017, or 2018. Keeping it out of a Washington house

The EPA’s guidance on wildfires and indoor air quality [13] is the standard playbook: close windows and doors, set the HVAC to recirculate and fit the highest-MERV filter the system tolerates, run a HEPA air cleaner in one room and make that the clean room, do not add to indoor particles (no candles, no frying, no vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum), and open up to ventilate when the outdoor AQI drops. In Washington’s heat that trade-off is real, which is why a clean room with a portable air cleaner is the practical unit of protection rather than the whole house.

When the outdoor air clears, the Washington house may not have. Residue that settled on surfaces and in the ductwork keeps releasing what it absorbed, and the smell that returns on warm days is that residue. That is the point at which a health question becomes a measurement question — and then a claim question.

After the smoke: test, then claim

If your Washington home smells of smoke, two kinds of professional are relevant and it helps to know which you are calling. Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) and environmental consultants test: they measure what settled on the surfaces and what is still in the air, and they put a number on it. Fire damage restoration technicians — disaster restoration specialists — clean: soot comes off with chemical sponges and HEPA vacuums, odor is treated with air scrubbers and thermal fogging, and any firefighting water is dried out before it becomes a mold problem.
